The 1953 Scientific Advisory Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects
When the Central Intelligence Agency decided to release some of its UFO files I noticed a lot of them were the same tired worn out cases we have been looking at for years. I am not saying I am familiar with every single case, I am just saying many of the highlighted ones were old hat. One thing I learned which I thought was very interesting was a lesson taught by the old Soviet Union regarding UFO cases. They were not always against suppression of speech when it came to UFOs and for a period of time allowed people to meet and discuss these things and even print newsletters. One day somebody in the government realized one of the UFO cases they were talking about was really a secret government launch, so they stopped allowing freedom on the subject again. I think this must be true, but I have no proof, it is the cases that have been released were probably heavily scrutinized to make sure none of them referred to any secret space activities by this country and ones we probably already knew about.
A memorandum to the Director of Central Intelligence from The Assistant Director, Office of Scientific Intelligence, dated October 2, 1952 which had a subject heading of flying saucers had a paragraph in it called conclusions and here is what it said, “Flying Saucers” close to elements of danger which have national security locations. The first involves mass psychological considerations and the second concerns the vulnerability of the United States air attack. One thing for sure is this memorandum proves the United States was worried about UFOs. In 1953 the Scientific Advisory Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects met from January 14 to the 17th. They put out a common sheet which began by saying the panel members were impressed with the lack of sound data in the great majority of case histories. But they did go on to say there were a few sightings which were discussed in significant detail and they were, Belafonte, Ohio 1 August 1952, Tremonton, Utah to July 1952, Great Falls, Montana 15 August 1950, Yaak, Montana 1 September 1952, the Washington DC area 19 July 1952, Haneda Air Force Base, Japan 5 August 1952, Port Huron, Michigan 29 July 1952 and Presque Isle, Maine 10 October 1952.
As one can see these cases are now ancient history, but were found interesting never the less. The case concerning the Belafonte site happen at 10:51 and 11:13 a.m. A U.S. Air Force radar site atop Campbell Hill tracked a target for 20 miles which was flying north northwest of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, in Dayton Ohio. It was traveling about 500 miles an hour and jets were sent up to intercept it. The planes were F 86s. The pilots made visual contact with the UFOs at about 10:55 a.m. one pilot had to climb to about 48,000 feet fell and climbed again to the same height and got a week return on his radar gun sight gunshot camera. The film showed an object with a diameter of between 24 to 40 feet. It was round and seem to be a silver colored sphere. It was estimated to be flying at 60,000 to 70,000 feet altitude. The sighting was never adequately explained.
The Tremonton, Utah UFO case of 1952 has a lot of facets that have excited UFO investigators for years. It has a film taken by a witness which is very rare in those days. The U.S. Air Force analyzed the film and gave an in depth study of it. The witness was a U.S. Navy officer and he saw a fleet of UFOs. Project Blue book investigated this case, but as we now know their only function was to disprove everything witnesses saw. The naval officer was on vacation with his wife and two children and was in Tremonton. His wife noticed a group of strange objects in the sky and he pulled the car over to investigate. It just so happened he had taken a movie camera with him to record his vacation so we loaded it and aimed it at the objects. His duty in the Navy was chief photographer which is quite a coincidence. He described the objects as looking silvery and metallic. The weather was extremely clear and he had excellent visibility. He was also a pilot and he said he had never seen anything like these objects before. The officer then sent the film to the Navy after contacting the Navy and Air Force. He went on to say the sky was clear of all planes and birds. Here is the address to the film he took, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=of3m8_LvUWs

The Great Falls Montana sighting took place at 11:25 a.m. The manager of the minor league baseball team and his secretary were inspecting an empty stadium before the game. The team was a farm team of the Brooklyn Dodgers. While walking through the stadium the manager noticed a bright flash in the sky and when he looked up he saw 2 white silvery objects rotating while flying over Great Falls at a speed estimated to be between 200 and 400 miles an hour. They estimated the size at about 50 feet wide and said they were about 150 feet apart. He was able to use a camera to get a picture of the objects. The camera could record color but not sound. Two fighter jets had been observed flying over the field just before the UFOs appeared. Here is the rub, it was said about 16 feet of film was sent for analysis while 8 feet was sent back. The parts of the film which showed the UFOs as rotating discs were now missing.
The Yaak, Montana case involved a U.S. Air Force radar site which at 4:45 a.m. tracked 2 blips in the sky. The objects were also seen by two Air Force enlisted men and appeared as lights. The lights became black silhouettes at dawn and flew around radically for an hour. By now three different radar operators were tracking them. For about an hour visual sightings continued and five witnesses were now involved and described what they saw as six cigar shaped objects.
Perhaps the most persuasive of all sightings happened over Washington DC in 1952 when UFOs appeared over the White House. Several times planes were sent up to intercept them, but before they could be reached they would disappear and then return when the planes were gone. The newspapers of the day carried the story, unlike today when the media hides anything to do with UFOs. The entire event upset the country and yet it seems to be ignored today.
The Haneda Air Force Base sighting involved an unusually bright bluish white light in the sky, and the radar unit for the base was alerted. The case had been explained away by saying things like diffraction of light. Many UFO investigators believe this was just a ruse. Two control towers saw this brilliant object in the sky. This case was of interest to Project Blue Book and they compiled 25 pages about it and it was included in the Condon report. The light was described as blinding. It had been calculated that it was about 2000 feet above one of the towers. The object was described as circular and was said to be part of a large round shape which was about four times the diameter of the bright light. It was also said the shape was observed through binoculars that were seven power and faint running lights could be seen. No sound could be heard.
In Port Huron at 9:40 PM an aircraft control warning station reported a UFO being seen on radar traveling at 550 knots. It was being chased by F-94s and one had gotten a radar lock on what appeared to be a bright flashing light at the time. It was traveling about 625 miles an hour and seem to be a large bluish white light. In a couple of seconds the object became reddish. As the F-94s chased the object one was able to get a radar lock on it, but just then the object sped away. Radar had clocked it at traveling in excess of 1400 miles an hour something no plane of the time could even imagine.
The last case cited took place from a plane over Presque Isle in Maine. At 9:55 AM a small gray oval shaped object was seen by the pilot of an F-94B fighter jet. The pilot pointed it out it to his radar observer and was at an altitude of 23,000 feet. The pilot attempted to intercept the object which was traveling at .8 mock which is 8/10 of the speed of sound. The chase continued for eight minutes and the plane was unable to gain on the object. The plane had to break off, because it was low on fuel. It seemed the object it was chasing was just toying with it. Two other fighter aircraft reported seeing the object.
