Things Which Defy Physics

Did you ever wonder about things which could never be explained satisfactorily? There are a lot of things we come across like this. One of those things is the placebo effect. Why is it during a medical trial when some precipitants are given a drug and some a placebo, some of those given the placebo either recover or get better to some extent? The big pharmaceutical companies know about this effect and may or may not know what is going on. If this one was ever figured out, drugs might become a thing of the past.

Mysteries abound everywhere and one I have often heard about has been puzzling scientists for years. Supposedly our universe is about 14 billion years old. Almost any astronomer will tell you this, but when they do they have decided to ignore one very important fact. The two edges of the universe are 28 billion light years apart. Why is this? Could it be our measurements are somehow inaccurate? Maybe the 14-billion-year date assigned to the age of the universe is wrong? This is definitely something which doesn’t make sense here. I have always thought the universe might go on forever and we are only seeing what we are able to see with our current instrumentation. Perhaps if we had more powerful optics we might find out something which would surprise us all. In any case maybe the 14 billion date is correct and we are at the exact center of the universe when it blew out like an explosion and extended 14 billion light years in every direction. This doesn’t agree with current thought which is the universe is flatter meaning it couldn’t have been created by an explosion which was equal in every direction. Not only that, what are the odds earth would be at the exact center of the Big Bang?

Why is it we can’t get a straight answer on whether life, probably in the form of microbes, exists on Mars? This is relatively easy to answer. The scientists are not sure. It isn’t because they have not tried to find out, it is because they got conflicting results. In 1976 Viking had a device onboard which detected methane. It was agreed if methane was detected that meant something was alive in the soil of Mars. Normally this would have been the answer, but hold on a second. There was another instrument on Viking designed to identify organic molecules and that instrument showed none. The scientists at NASA decided they didn’t want to take the chance and say life was detected under the circumstances and they are still arguing over it.

It seems we have found a few things which defy our current understanding of physics. It is hard to know where to start so let’s start with the sun. The sun can make something hotter than it is. This defies physics because we are taught this is not possible and quite frankly this isn’t seen anywhere else. This defies the laws of thermodynamics. It doesn’t make the heat moving away a litter hotter, but incredibly hotter. We are talking about a difference of 5,500 degrees Celsius to 1,000,000 degrees Celsius. If one were to fill a fish tank with Hexafluoride or SF6 gas it would stay in the open tank because it is much heavier than air, but there is more to this. Light objects can float on it like they float on water. One thing which is yet to be explained is how over 90 cases of amphibians were found inside stones and were still alive. This defies all logic, but there is no denying it has happened.

A planet was found which defies the law of physics. It is named WASP-18b. What makes this planet so special is it is 10 times the size of Jupiter and orbits its star in under 24 hours. That is quite a speedy trip. The problem with all this is it should be spiraling into the star. According to physics a planet this big which is as close to its star as this one is shouldn’t exist. There should be bulging as the star pulls it closer and yet this doesn’t seem to happen, why? There is no explanation given. I certainly am not a professional astronomer, but I was thinking maybe the composition of the star causes it to have lower gravitational pull for some reason or maybe the composition of the planet is such it has some reverse form of gravity, wouldn’t that be something?

There are some people who should know, who state physics should be fixed somehow. Maybe this was brought about when quantum physics was discovered, because it literally broke physics into two branches when it was found objects in the micro world do not always behave like those in the macro world.  Now we have Newtonian Physics for our everyday world and Quantum Physics for our microscopic one. There are still things which in the macro world Newtonian physics cannot explain. As we examine our universe we seem to be finding more things which don’t seem to fit into Newtonian Physics.

I don’t want to leave this article without saying some things which seem impossible to explain using physics yet they really fit nicely into physics even though you may see them listed as defying physics. An example are some liquids which can flow up. One of them is egg whites. You can actually draw up the egg white liquid using a syringe which you dipped into the liquid and began to draw up and then pull it up out of the liquid a small distance and the liquid will still get sucked up.
