Things That Baffle The Mind

I was reading something the other day and thought to myself the thing scientists were talking about must really be confusing to the rest of us. Somehow I think it might even be confusing to them. Every once in a while we read something which doesn’t seem to make sense, but we are told by authorities in the field it is true. The article I was reading had to do with the creation of the earth. We, including me, think the earth was created from the material in clouds which also formed the sun. So far so good. Here is the kicker, some scientists are saying the outside of the earth is older than the inside. They say it is not by much, only about 2.5 years. I can’t help myself, I have to ask the obvious question. If you are looking at something believed to be about 4.5 billion years old, how could you tell the minute difference of 2.5 years? The second part of the question is if this is true, how could it happen? To be precise we are talking about the core of the earth being younger than the rest of the planet. I will leave these answers to those who are far smarter than myself. There is one more part to this and it is scientists are telling us the sun’s core is 40,000 younger than its surface.

The next mind boggling thing I want to talk about is an experiment in Quantum Physics. Quantum Physics is the study of the very tiny. A few years ago scientists found out the physics which explain why things happen the way they do in the macro world, which is our world the one we are familiar with, do not seem to apply in many instances to the tiny world of atoms, electrons and such. Newton who is credited with the standard form of physics would be turning over in his grave if he saw how things take place in the sub-atomic world. Let me give you a mind blowing example. Scientists decided to conduct an experiment which had to do with Quantum Physics. It was called the Double Slit Experiment. If an electron is fired at a wall with 2 slits in it, it will sometimes go through one or the other, but sometimes will go through both slits at once. This means the electron is appearing in 2 places at the same time which seems impossible. Think this is weird? If the experiment is watched at the time the electron is shot it will always go through one slit. The act of watching the experiment changes the outcome.

Back to Quantum Physics. Scientists have just found out something really strange and this could be the one that really blows your mind. They have found out the future can change the past. In 2007 an experiment was carried out and it has to do with the double slit experiment again. One scientist explained there are conditions in space which are similar to the double slit experiment. He takes the experiment further and states if you observe the two slits you are making light behave like a particle and if you don’t watch it behaves like a wave. He goes on to say if you wait for it to pass through the slit and then observe which way it came through it will retroactively force it to have passed through one of the slits. In other words causality is working backwards and the present is affecting the past. Taking this to observing the heavens, he thinks by observing certain stars and such which meet the criteria of the slit experiment we are changing their history. Yipes! Are we destroying planetary history?

Human brains seem to be programed at least to some extent. There is a lot we understand, but there are also things we cannot comprehend. Einstein told us the universe is finite. He said if we could shoot a beam of light from here it would eventually come back to the starting point. I never understood that, because if the universe is finite what is outside it? Is it like some sort of cage? Anyway some scientists are saying they believe the universe is infinite and goes on forever. We are not programmed to understand the infinite. We are programmed to think everything has a beginning and an end. We cannot understand anything else no matter how hard we try. Some scientists may say this is baloney, but could they truly explain how something could be without starting and last forever? I don’t think so. Just because our telescopes can only see to a certain point doesn’t mean this is all there is. We don’t even know if there are things out there we are not capable of detecting.

Some scientists believe if the universe is infinite than there are repercussions. These have to do with repetition. It is believed given enough size, the universe will have to repeat some if not all of the things in it. This means we would also be repeated somewhere. The argument is if there is enough of a chance all patterns will repeat. This means ever bug, fish, animal, microbe and human on this planet could be repeated somewhere out there. This brings up a question, would there be copies of us or are we copies of them? Could there be more than one copy? Does this mean the theory of alternate universes could be true? Alternate universes are places where every action we could have taken in our lives was taken by us in another universe. In some universes we are already dead, in other we are living to a ripe old age. We might be very successful in some universes and very poor in others.

I am not one to believe in homeopathic medicines, but New Scientist reported something very interesting in 2005. First let me explain more fully what I am talking about. There is a belief among people who practice homeopathy you can take a solution, no matter how deadly, and keep diluting it with water until not one molecule of it is left in the water and the water will still be beneficial and act as if the solution was still in it. A pharmacologist at Queen’s University in Belfast was a critic of homeopathy and decided to prove this was all bunk. A study showed the opposite of what she was trying to prove so she had 4 different labs run tests and they all came out the same. Somehow water which contained no trace of the original fluid, in this case histamine, worked just like it when taken. It was not the placebo effect since it worked 100% of the time in this instance. Can water take on the memory of what was once in it when that fluid is removed? Do the big drug companies know this and are they withholding this information?

As computer technology advances it will not be bound with the limitations of the human brain. Perhaps once these limitations are lifted we will be able to see the true picture of things. The picture which has avoided us, because we were not capable of understanding what we were looking at.
