Resurrecting Dinosaurs

For years, scientists have been attempting to resurrect dinosaurs and also extinct mammals. Is this a good idea? It wasn’t in Jurassic Park was it? Sure, that was only a movie, but how do we know it wouldn’t be a mistake to bring back these huge animal? There are things in nature we don’t understand, and apparently nature had its reasons for eliminating these giant creatures and some believe that reason was to protect smaller mammals and eventually people. If dinosaurs would have been allowed to continue none of us might even be here because our ancestors might have landed up in the bellies of the beasts. Can you imagine how hard it would be to kill some of these creatures? As ingenious as our first ancestors were, they just didn’t have the right tools to eliminate this threat.

Science has been telling us that dinosaurs were more closely related to birds than anything around today. There is a story going around the Internet which claims scientists have been working with chickens trying to clone dinosaurs. They felt the chickens were much more closely related so that cloning would stand a better chance. They claim that so far, the reason they have not been able to succeed is because of defective DNA. They say the DNA module they have to work with comes apart before can be useful. Why is this? Is it nature as I said above, preventing the cloning or some higher power? Could a creature ever be a 100% perfect replica of dinosaurs which lived in the past?

A dinosaur expert was asked if it was possible to create a Jurassic Park? Presumably the major source for dinosaur DNA could be from a bloodsucking mosquito which got itself trapped in amber and was well preserved. The expert claims we have enough mosquitoes and biting flies preserved this way from the time of the dinosaurs to attempt cloning. She says there is a problem with the preservation and that is soft tissue and blood is not preserved. Preservation only protects the husk.” So, you don't get blood preserved inside mosquitos in amber.” One mosquito was found which died 45,000,000 years ago which was millions of years after the dinosaurs. It was preserved in like sediments and they did find a red pigment and its abdomen. This did not mean the creature had DNA in the blood, and it didn’t.

You may not think this is ironic, but I do. Dr. Alan Grant is heading genetic research into resurrecting extinct dinosaurs. The part I find ironic is he was the paleontologist who inspired the movie Jurassic Park in the first place. One of the most dangerous species of dinosaur was the T.Rex. It turns out the chicken experiment has more to do with triggering ancient DNA already in chickens from their dinosaur past than trying to obtain new DNA from extinct animals.

It turns out a fly had been found in 1980 which was 40,000,000 years old, but that is not the most amazing thing about the find. The reason why scientists were overjoyed is the cells inside of the fly had not deteriorated. This seems to be exactly what scientists were looking for. Moving forward to 2020, forty years later, we haven’t found any cloned dinosaurs. I guess the find was not as important as one might think. First of all, the fly was not alive during the dinosaur period. In 1992 a  paleontologist named Mary Schweitzer was said to have discovered that dinosaur fossils, “contain molecules that are found in red blood cells, and that certain types of dinosaur tissue could “survive fossilization.”

If we learn enough about DNA might we then be able to create it artificially? So far, it has been found it is theoretically possible to make a completely synthetic DNA molecule. As we get better at this just imagine the monsters scientists will start to create. With a better understanding of DNA and the other applicable sciences, it just might be possible in the near future to re-create anything we want. We may no longer have to look for DNA in all fossilized bones or petrified skin. I am sure when we first start out to use the DNA we created artificially, we will have tragedies and accidents until we are able to find out and control the entire birth process using artificial DNA. Would a dinosaur created with artificial DNA be any less menacing? I think that question answers itself.

Can you imagine having a zoo in the middle of the city and a dinosaur gets loose? There are events that have happened all over the world concerning animals escaping zoos, can you imagine how much worse it would be if it  was a T.Rex. You certainly wouldn’t want to see one of these babies running down the street in your direction. Not only that, science has found that some dinosaurs were actually pretty smart so you wouldn’t want to have these types going after you, to hunt you down.

Jeff Goldblum, the star of Jurassic Park, was asked point-blank if he thought it was a good idea to bring the dinosaurs back to life. I know he is only a movie actor but it’s interesting given his part in the movie to find out what he thought and that was, it was a very bad idea. This is one of the few times I have agreed with Hollywood types on their opinions of things ,but I also believe bringing back dinosaurs, unless there is a very compelling reason, is not a good idea. Does this mean I think all cloning is bad? I truthfully haven’t made up my mind on that question yet, but I do think human cloning would be terrible. I know by saying this a lot of scientists might jump down my throat if they knew what I said, but I believe just because something can be done doesn’t mean it has to be. It is the same way I felt about creating minuscule black holes in the particle accelerator. I felt that was also a bad idea because it only takes one to get out of control. Scientists countered with the answer to people worrying about this by saying there is only a very slight chance anything could go wrong. Why would we take any chances to develop a black hole? If there is a chance we are going to be wiped out, why take it even if it is a small chance. Another problem with bringing back dinosaurs is we could be revitalizing ancient diseases they carried, after all at least one theory states dinosaurs were wiped out by microorganisms that destroyed them. I don’t think any of us want to catch these diseases.
