Telekinesis and Psychokinesis
There are a lot of things we can’t explain. Some people believe that Telekinesis is actually within the reach of our mere mortals. Let me tell you about a game I used to play when I was young and you can draw your own conclusions, but before you do you have to try it yourself. The things you need are a sewing needle and a long piece of thread. You take the needle and thread it allowing the need to hang down about 10 inches. Hold the end of the thread and start thinking about the directing you want the needle to go. You can think about circles, back and forth or almost any motion. I prefer circles. Holding the thread and thinking real hard makes the needle swing in the direction you are thinking about. The only explanation ever given was that someone was moving their hand, but this is not the case, try it. You will see you too can perform Telekinesis in a small way.
So what exactly is Telekinesis? A very simple definition is Telekinesis is the production of motion in objects without contact or other physical means. It is true it would be more meaningful if one could move the needle with the thread attached, but it is still an amazing thing that most of us are capable of doing. There are actually sites on the internet which claim to be able to train people so they can use their telekinetic powers which have been subdued. Psychokinesis is slightly different from telekinesis. Psychokinesis is the mental influence of physical systems and objects, while telekinesis refers to the movement and levitation of physical objects. Many experiments into telekinesis have been conducted but scientists were quick to jump up and say they most didn’t have the proper safeguards. There are a lot of people who believe in mind over matter. That is they believe one can influence the events in the world just by willing things to happen.
I remember reading a book written by a man who won various lotteries hundreds of times. He gave the credit to believing he would win and claimed by believing this he had willed the winning. He said that he had won the top prizes of millions of dollars several of times and had hundreds of lesser prizes. I say if he had true psychokinesis he would have won the top prize every time and what this guy had was an inordinate amount of luck. There is no denying that some people are far luckier than others. Some magicians claim they can duplicate any supposed telekinesis act. They claim this proves telekinesis doesn’t exist and is just a trick. This seems to be faulty thinking. They might be right in saying telekinesis doesn’t exist, but what they are doing certainly doesn’t prove it. If I were to fire a cannon shell at a target and I blew it up and some trickster planted explosives at the target and made it look like they blew up the target by firing a cannon at it, even though the results are the same, the target is destroyed, it doesn’t mean the cannon was never fired in the first instance.
One of the problems associated with telekinesis is the fact the field is and was full of quacks. Many of these people were proven to be frauds and because of this the people involved were thought of in the same way as mediums who claimed to contact the dead. Some of these people became very famous. One was James Hydrick who had the strange combinations of expert in martial arts and psychic with psychokinetic ability. He would take a pencil and set it down on the edge of a table and make it spin without touching it. He would also turn the pages of a book by, he said, using his mind. The problem it was not his mind he was using but accurately directed air currents. Uri Geller has been bending silverware for decades and has always claimed he did it with his mind. Magicians claim Geller is a fraud and many had duplicated what he does using tricks. Β
A panel was commissioned by the United States National Research Council. There had been so much talk about telekinesis and psychokinesis they thought they should investigate it. It turned out the military believed in psychokinesis and several labs provided evidence it did exist, the military wanted to use it to jam weapons and such. When the panel investigated these labs they found that the results of psychokinesis experiments could easily have been faked by the labs and there were no experiments which would have proven without a doubt that the test results affirming the existence of psychokinesis powers were accurate. The panel stated the tests departed from good scientific practice in many different ways and were therefore useless.
One look at the many sites pushing telekinesis and psychokinesis prove that there are still many people who believe it is possible to cultivate these powers or to even be born with them. Some people point to the fact that there are many faith healers out there and some have records of healing people and that this is part of the same ball of wax. I say a much better example might be the placebo effect. That is where people are given drugs in a blind test. Blind test means some get the drugs and other a placebo and yet a certain percentage of the people who receive the placebo are helped or cured. This could certainly be proof that our minds can affect the real world and even cure our bodies.
There will always be people who claim to have psychokinetic and telekinetic abilities. There are so many maybe one or two could have these abilities but it doesn’t seem likely. If these abilities truly existed beyond the ability to cure ourselves or move a tiny sewing needle we would have seen much more of it. Some criminals would be using it to commit crimes and the military would have companies of these kinds of people ready to do battle with America’s enemies. I haven’t seen any of this have you?
It might be that as our brains evolve further we might all gain these abilities someday, but it seems that day has not arrived yet. It might be we will develop devices which will enhance the power of our brains in the future and bestow these powers on us with the push of a button. I think the only thing we can be sure of now is that no one really has these powers yet
