Do Monsters Exist? There are those who believe, or at least suspect, some of the mythical monsters in our history may have really existed and there are those who also believe there are other monsters today on the earth like Bigfoot, Yeti, lake monsters and many others. I can understand some of these beliefs such as the lake monsters, because so many people claim to have seen them and many of these lakes lead to the ocean which is vast and contains sea life which in some cases looks very weird to the layman. An example of this is the Oarfish. These are thin long fish which look like a ribbon and can grow to lengths in excess of 36 feet. There might even be longer ones around we haven’t come across yet. If one of these fish was undulating through the water it would look just like a sea serpent. When an Oarfish washed ashore in Bermuda in 1860 everyone thought they were looking at a sea serpent. There has even been a study conducted to learn more about the oarfish and guess what it was called? It was the SERPENT Project. One of the problems with Oarfish being mistaken for sea monsters in lakes is the lake would have to contain salt water, since the Oarfish is a saltwater fish. The following address contains a photo of an Oarfish and you can copy and paste the address into your browser’s address bar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oarfish Sorry Truth Facts does not use live outside link. One monster which actually exists has been talked about for hundreds of years. In the days of wooden ships sailors used to tell tales of huge octopus like monsters coming up from the ocean and dragging down ships. This was laughed at by many disbelievers until recently it was found there are such things as the giant squid. I am not saying it was dragging down ships, but obviously the sight of one of these giants would make those old time sailors’s blood run cold and who could blame them. The female giant squid has been known to grow to a length of 43 feet and the male to about 33 feet. Guess what? It turns out there is a bigger squid species and it is known as the Colossal squid. This squid grows to about 46 feet long and is believed it can weigh up to 1,650 pounds. The Giant squid has tentacles with stickers lined with small teeth while the Colossal squid has giant hooks on its tentacles, some of which swivel. One can see how an animal of this enormity and ferocity could be mistaken for some kind of monster. Of all the mythical animals, more people believe dragons existed than any other. There is probably a very good reason for this. What many of us don’t realize is the fact the ancient Greeks and maybe races before them dug up dinosaur bones. The difference between them and us is they never knew what they had. It is only in the last few hundred years we realized there were dinosaurs roaming the earth many millions of years ago. The older civilizations never knew how old the bones were and they thought in some cases the bones were fairly recent. I think you can see where I am going with this. They found giant bones, maybe even flying dinosaur remains and though they were from dragons. I am not sure where the fire breathing legend came from, maybe it has something to do which how some of the bones looked. Some ancient Greeks even put some of the bones on display in their temples. Griffins may have come from the fact when ancient bones were dug up they may have gotten mixed in with lion or other animal bones. Some of the ancient writers were very good at dreaming up monsters and at a time when most people couldn’t read, some of these fictitious monsters may have been mistaken for the real thing. As word spread around about some of these stories there may have been many who didn’t know they were fiction and thought they were listening to a real tale. We are talking about a lot of uneducated people in some cases. The ancient Greeks thought up a lot of monsters and here are some of them. The Cyclops was a one eyed giant. The Chimera had the head of a lion, the tail of a snake, a goat’s head behind the lion head and breathed fire. The Empusa was a beautiful woman, but she could turn into a creature with very sharp teeth, flaming hair and bat wings. She liked to drink human blood and eat flesh. She was controlled by the goddess Hecate. I think we all know what the Hydra is. The hydra was a many headed serpent monster which emitted a deadly toxin. The Cerberus was the guard dog of Hades. It had 3 heads and was massive and liked human flesh. The Minotaur had the body of a man and the head of a bull. It lived in a labyrinth. Medusa was very famous. She had snakes for hair and her stare would turn humans to stone. There were many other Greek monsters, I have only given you some. Why is it we are so fascinated by monsters? Well-made monster movies produce a tidy profit, proving many people are monster story lovers. Is it we like to be scared, but not too scared since we know these things do not really exist? Since the invention of the movie, some of the earliest movies have had monsters in them and not all the monsters were flesh and blood. One silent movie from 1927 featured a futuristic robot which I think was thought of as a type of monster at the time. There were vampires such as Nosferatu (1922), Frankenstein (1910), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), and The Golem (1920) to name a few. By the way if you would like to watch some of these silent movies here is the address: http://www.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/lists/10-great-silent-horror-films Are there real monsters in this world? As I said some people believe in Bigfoot, others the Yeti and then there are all sorts of ghosts high on the list of some people. We may be modern people, but many of us do believe monsters still exist. The funny part of all this is there could be undiscovered animals, sea life and even things in the air we still know nothing about, are there monsters? Who knows? |
