The 2024 Honda Civic Touring
Over the years I have used many different navigation devices in my cars. Even the first navigation devices were pretty good. It was extremely rare, but I was taken to the wrong address two or three times over the years. One would think this couldn’t happen anymore, but it happened to me with a navigation app I was using, a very popular one. At that point I had to disconnect my cell phone from the car and tried the car’s built-in navigation and it saved me from being late or never getting to my car’s recall appointment.
Did you ever think cars might get so complicated there would be just too much to remember? When my former car was destroyed in an accident, I decided the next car would be a small one, not too small, it still had to be comfortable. I made this decision because I don’t drive a lot anymore. My trips are mostly within 20 miles or so with the occasional long trip. This led me to the Honda Civic. I didn’t want an economy box however, so I went with the Honda Civic Touring which had a really nice interior and exterior. When I sat in it, I was surprised how much room there was inside. I am a little over 5 foot 10 inches and still had plenty of room above my head along with nice leg and hip room. The leather seats were very comfortable and heated. The car was a step down from what I had. There was no heated steering wheel or back seat vents which were adjustable, but I figured I could live without these things.
I didn’t know it at the time, but the car had so many apps and controls with symbols it was very confusing. I didn’t realize when I bought the car the feature of turning off the engine at lights and such and restarting the engine when you stepped on the gas or turned the steering wheel could not be permanently disengaged without modifying the car. There was a button between the seat to turn the feature off but once you parked the car and turned it off, you would always have to reengage the button. At first, I would always engage the button to turn the feature off, but as time went by, I got more daring and started to drive with the feature that turned the engine off, now I don’t even think about it.
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to set some of the features on the car and I am still no expert. The manual is really thick. Sometimes I had a problem with things that should be really simple such as opening the hood. I found the control to pop it, but had a hard time getting my fingers in the space provided and finding the latch. This really made me feel like an idiot.
The car is a rolling computer with a digital adjustable display. Some of the settings can be set from different buttons or screens while others are specific to one control. I had a problem with a radio station coming on when I went to the navigation with the cell phone and for the heck of me couldn’t figure out how to turn it off without losing the voice for the navigation on Google Maps. The voice works perfect on the car’s navigation even with the radio on or off.
When the phones went to 5G I lost many of the features on my 2018 Hyundai Sonata turbo. I was really ticked off at the time because I felt I found out this did not affect all models and some other makes, and that was the reason I didn’t buy another Hyundai along with all the engine recalls. The irony here is I only had the Honda Civic for 2 weeks before I had a steering recall and a computer update for problems. I was getting all sorts of warnings. That is all in the past however and the car runs fine now, except I still don’t know all the settings. The computer update changed all the warning symbols just when I had them down pat. One thing I lost which is a little annoying was the fact if I get a low tire warning, it does not tell me which tire and since the tires are low profile, you could land up having to check them all before finding the right one. My Hyundai showed the low tire’s position on the car’s screen.
One of the things the car did not come with was air-conditioned front seats which I had on my other car. It did come with a remote start so I can cool the car off before driving in the summer, so I really don’t miss it much. Due to the construction design of the Civic, I can’t stand the wipers up, which is an inconvenience when I know it is going to snow. On the other hand, since I am talking about windshield wipers, the car comes with, to me, is one of the most useless features, it is a rain sensitive wiper on and off setting which can be adjust for various amounts of rain. I prefer the old setting which allows one to adjust the variable speed of the wipers when they are turned on.
The Hyundai would go from 0 to 60 in about 7 seconds. The Civic Touring is almost as fast doing 0 to 60 in about 7.5 seconds. This is fast enough for me and I have no problems getting on highways. The Civic has a sun roof but it is not panoramic. I didn’t really care, but some people complain about it. The remote start works right off the fob, I believe you can also start the car remotely from a cell phone with the Honda app if you have a subscription which I didn’t get.
Honda sales have increased. When the sales report for 2024 came out there was a 9 percent increase with 1.4 million Hondas being sold in America. I had wondered about that because when I bought my Honda, the showroom was full of people in the afternoon. It had been my previous experiences that showrooms at that time on a work day might only have one or two families or people looking around. Honda was flooded with people and had a large sales staff. They must be doing something right. All in all, I have to say I really like the car, even though there is a lot to learn.
