Global Peace Country Lists

There are some countries which are geographically located in terrible areas. It could be because they are in areas which are naturally unsuitable for farming and such. Other countries are unfortunately near militant countries and these countries are afraid for their safety. We see evidence of this type of thing all over the world. There always seems to be a country where some maniac thinks nothing of killing massive amounts of people. There is an organization known as Global Peace and they issue an index of the 25 most dangerous countries in the world. The organization stated 93 countries became more peaceful in 2017, but 68 became less peaceful. A lot of countries were listed as medium on the peace index, a few were surprises because I think many of us thought of them as peaceful. The countries listed as medium were Guyana, Liberia, Haiti, Bangladesh, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bolivia, Gabon Cuba, Cambodia, Lesotho, Burkina Faso, Jamaica, Nepal, Georgia, Jordan, Guinea, Papua New Guinea, Trinidad & Tobago, Dominican Republic, Angola, Uzbekistan, Macedonia, Belarus, Myanmar, Uganda, Honduras, Djibouti, Brazil, Algeria, The Gambia, Kyrgyz Republic, Armenia, Rwanda, United States, El Salvador, China, Guatemala, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Thailand.

You can see we were on this list. I guess this is because of the wars we are involved in. I was surprised to see Jamaica, Nepal, Jordan, Guinea, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Guatemala, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Thailand on the list. There is another list and this is of the peaceful countries and it includes, The United Kingdom, Zambia, Ghana, Madagascar, Laos, Mongolia, South Korea, Malawi, Panama, Namibia, France, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Tanzania, Argentina, Serbia, Albania, Kuwait. I am surprised to see South Korea with the back and forth with North Korea.

The list of countries which are rated very low as far as peace is concerned is quite large considering the topic. It includes, North Korea, Russia, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ukraine, Central African Republic, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. There are also those countries which are rated as low. These countries are Bahrain, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Chad, Eritrea, India, Philippines, Egypt, Mali, Burundi, Mexico, Venezuela, Israel, Palestine, Colombia, Turkey, Lebanon, and Nigeria. I think surprises in this list are Mexico, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Azerbaijan.

There is also a rating for least militarized countries and I would have said it was Monaco or perhaps Liechtenstein, but I would have been wrong. The country which was picked as the least militarized was Iceland. The world is in trouble and one can see this in the way countries are run. Some countries have a problem with organized crime and I believe this affected their standings. A case in point is Mexico and some say this is also a problem in Russia. Other countries have leaders which are beating the war drums such as North Korea. Then there are those countries which export terrorism and many of them are in the Middle East. Will the world ever be entirely at peace? I don’t think it ever has been, so why should things be different now? We may be more advanced technologically, but we are still the same people we were thousands of years ago. It is hard to change human nature.

When a poor country is next to a relatively rich one, it might cause the poorer country to desire what the richer country has. This has probably led to more wars than anything else besides religion. Let me talk about North Korea again. They are one of the poorest countries in Asia and yet they are next to one of the most successful. North Korea is so poor when satellite photos are taken at night, there are hardly any lights visible, because there is no electricity. This has to bother the leadership of that country and make them look to the South and desire it.

Some are saying the Russians would like nothing more than to acquire their former satellites and countries which were part of the old Soviet Union. This has caused countries like Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the Baltic States to become very nervous, because they fear invasion and the Ukraine also fears a bigger invasion. The country which was picked as the least peaceful in the world was not North Korea, it was Syria, which was picked two years in a row. I guess we can all understand why when we see what is going on there. The people of Syria are suffering and are caught in the middle of massive attacks.

If we asked the question of whether the world is more embattled today than any time in the past, what would the answer be? Sure, we have far more deadly weapons, but that has nothing to do with the question I am asking. It seems there have been wars going on somewhere in the world for just about every year humans were on this planet. Some sociologists and philosophers have debated the fact we have destructive war like impulses. They wonder if these come from our genetic code. They argue the point of whether we are hard wired to attack each other even when we are not provoked. I have always wondered if some people who make it to leadership have some sort of mental problem which goes undetected but leads them to think differently than we do. In other words, was Hitler sane or was he really a mentally ill person and we didn’t know it and even worse did he surround himself with others who were mentally ill?

There can be a lot of different reasons for war. Some might be perceived as being true, but really aren’t. Others may have to do with money, religion or territory. The reason for war could just be hate. Whatever the reason is for war, it is a deadly enterprise and gets deadlier as time goes by.
